A new study announced at Melbourne's 2011 Oceania Conference on Foot Diseases found that running barefoot is healthier than running on shoes.
Dr. Irene Davis of Harvard University in the United States has been engaged in running research on barefoot running and wearing as few shoes and socks as possible. The latter refers to a kind of thin-bottom sneakers that mimic bare feet. The shape resembles that of a glove. The toes are naturally separated but the soles are thinner. This kind of shoes can maximize the natural activity of the foot.
Dr. Davies analyzed that once the shoes are taken off, the artificial tendons and the muscles of the feet, ankles, calves and thighs will start to disperse each other as soon as they get out of the artificial shock-absorbing insole. When some runners start running barefoot, they feel very painful because they are not accustomed to using these muscles to control their feet and shock absorption. Therefore, every step is very tight.
Davies said that wearing shoes running and wearing advanced running shoes with stronger motion control and shock absorption will cause the degradation of human's "natural running function" on both feet. The new study also found that barefoot running also helps flat foot patients to enhance and improve the arch function.
